Activating the quest

Quest Requirements: This quest can only be completed after reaching at least level 32. Since you should have a well-developed character by then, you can approach him right away.

There are two ways to activate this quest. The first is to receive and read the Proof of Boethiah. Keep in mind that this is random, and you can find the book in any part of the world or when you meet the cultist of Boethiah, whom you must kill.

If you don't want to wait until you find a book, you can head straight to the Sacellum of Boethiah. The area can be found in the mountains in the eastern part of Skyrim, and if you haven't discovered it yet, it's best to start with the nearby town of Windhelm.

Reaching the Sacellum can be a bit problematic. I would recommend heading east from Windhelm and staying on a hardened trail. Turn south, passing by the Traitor's Post.

You'll know you're on the right track if you see the Sacellum wall in the distance. If you did not activate this quest after finding the book, it should be added to your diary after you get close enough to the Sacellum of Boethiah.

Meeting with the Priestess of Boethiah

Approach the cultists' camp, and you will be automatically stopped by the priestess, who will declare that everyone has gathered and the followers of Boethiah. You have to tell her that you want to take the test. The priestess will tell you that to prove these words, you will need to bring a friendly person to the shrine and kill her as part of the ritual. She will also give you the Blade of Sacrifice.

Making a sacrifice

As you've probably guessed, you can sacrifice the life of anyone you like, assuming that he or she can follow you as a party member. Of course, I would recommend considering your choice so as not to kill anyone related to an important quest or a unique ability trainer. The best candidates are those who have little influence on the plot, who can follow you without any requirements or after completing a small assignment. After selecting a candidate, return to the Sacellum of Boethiah and climb the stairs leading to the shrine.

Stop at the pillar and wait until a member of your group reaches you. Talk to him and select the second dialog option from above.
