The assassination of Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, and the outbreak of the First World War - a month after this event - had devastating consequences for the whole of Europe. For Poles, the outbreak of war between the existing allies - Germany, Austria-Hungary and Tsarist Russia - gave hope for independence after more than a century of captivity. The dreams of Poles came true after four years of war, and the Republic of Poland reappeared as an independent and sovereign state on the map of Europe.
But what is the significance of the Great War of 1914-1918 for the Poles? What was the policy of the Poles towards the dividers? How did they feel about the struggle on the part of the dividing powers, and finally, what actions did Polish politicians and military take in the struggle for an independent Poland? Andrzej Chwalba, one of the most famous Polish historians, raised these topics in the publication "The Great Polish War of 1914-1918".
In the book, the author combines political and social events with the history of the military, considering them as a whole. It is worth adding that the Krakow historian also describes the war that took place in Poland under the partitions. They were of particular importance for the Polish population living in the areas where the fighting was taking place, as well as for the participation of Polish soldiers.
The chronological framework of Andrzej Chwalbi's book marks two key events in European history - the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, and the restoration of Polish independence in November 1918. During the four years of the war, he left a huge mark on Polish lands and people. Therefore, the Polish historian devoted a lot of space to the participation of Poles in the battles in the invading forces, but above all to the battles that took place on Polish lands - Tannenberg, Lviv, Przemysl, Gorlice, Sochachev and Limanov. The author's stories about everyday life in Poland are especially interesting by section. Examples include information about censorship, restrictions in border areas, and the prevailing espionage panic.
In particular, it is worth paying attention to the descriptions of the occupiers' policy towards Poles, as well as the attitude of the Polish population, as well as Polish politicians and the military to the power of the separators. It was completely different in each of the three sections. This is especially evident when comparing the German and Austro-Hungarian partitions, where the differences were significant. It is worth noting that in Austria-Hungary, Polish politicians even sought to turn a dualistic monarchy into a trialist one, that is, into an Austro-Hungarian Poland. The situation was different in the German and Russian sections, where Poles did not trust the local authorities. Even during the period when the German army captured the Polish territories of the Russian partition, the occupiers pursued a policy of looting here, and when they became convinced that it was worth convincing the Poles to support the new government, their efforts failed.
In his work, the historian of Jagiellonian University also devoted a place to descriptions of daily life during the ongoing war, social changes, the activities of the Catholic Church, the occupation administration and the economy, which in military realities were of key importance for the conduct of the war. So far, there has not been a publication that would fully analyze the issue of the Great War in three sections. Until now, historians have focused on political and military issues, but Andrzej Chwalbi's work covers both these as well as social and religious issues. That's why I recommend it to all historians, especially those who deal with the period of the struggle for Polish independence, including the Great War of 1914-1918.
